Both online casinos and online betting are legal in the country. The Ghana Gambling Commission (GGC) is the sole regulator of the sector, with the exception of the lottery, which is managed by the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

The GGC is responsible for issuing licenses, enforcing legal requirements and protecting the rights of players. The market is competitive, with both local and international operators participating.

In April 2025, the state authorities abolished the 10% tax on winnings, which was levied on any amount won. For this reason, some operators have already increased the volume of advertising campaigns in Ghana.

Recall that the levy was introduced in August 2023 to increase the jurisdiction's internal revenue.

Immediately after the innovation, the opposition called on citizens to seize government offices, demanding the abolition of the onerous tax policy for players.

However, the repeal of the levy also drew criticism but from the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Ghana. It noted that the levy was an important source of revenue for the country and helped curb the spread of gambling addiction among the population.

The IEA had earlier proposed a compromise solution - to reduce the existing 10% tax to 5% instead of abolishing it altogether.
