Illegal online gambling (gambling in the country is allowed and regulated at the level of each state) continues to grow steadily in the iGaming market in India, generating about $100bn per year and increasing by 20% annually.
The main reasons for this are the huge 28 per cent tax levied on player deposits and regulatory uncertainty, preventing even large gambling companies from operating effectively in India's iGaming market.
However, despite the tough conditions, the sector is attracting investment. For example, US companies have already invested $1.7bn in the development of the industry. The growing population and a significant proportion of young people, who see gambling as an opportunity to earn easy money, are likely to be significant incentives for investors.
