More about gambling regulation
Online casinos are banned in Turkey, with legal forms of gambling being the national lottery and sports betting from state-owned betting company IDDAA, which is the only organization allowed to offer online betting to Turkish citizens.
The authorities are fighting against illegal gambling platforms: over 1 million payment accounts used for transactions with illegal gambling sites have already been blocked. Also in 2024, the Information and Communication Technology Authority of Turkey blocked 183 thousand illegal gambling sites.
Turkey has a population of more than 80 million people, of which more than 10 million play on illegal gambling platforms (the country has a state monopoly on betting, and online casinos are banned). Therefore, the authorities are intensively continuing the fight against the shadow market.
It is known that in early November 2024, Turkish police detained 17 people, including celebrities (singer Serdar Ortaç, TV presenter and actor Mehmet Ali Erbil, former footballer Batuhan Karadeniz, Influencer Ibrahim Yılmaz and others), who are accused of promoting illegal gambling sites. Some of them are wanted, others are under house arrest.
Also recently, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) set fines for the country's soccer clubs for advertising illegal gambling sites.
For the first offense a fine of $58 thousand, for the second - $146 thousand, for the third - almost $300 thousand and removal of three points in the standings. The ban applies to all types of media and equipment used in stadiums, as well as affiliate programs associated with unlicensed bookmakers.
According to Turkey's Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK), the country's illegal iGaming sector is worth more than $3 billion and the economic loss from illegal gambling is $8.7 billion.
